Slice and Bake Wooden Cookie Set by Melissa & Doug

My Mother’s Day celebration was postponed this year. I had calls from my out-of-state children wishing me Happy Mother’s Day. But instead of doing something on the 2nd Sunday in May, my daughter made reservations for us, plus her grandmother, to have high tea at Queen Mary’s.

Years and years earlier she had a birthday party at Queen Mary’s.  The birthday theme: High Tea! Not just with me, her grandmother, and best friend but American Girl Dolls were invited too!

If a tea shop isn’t close to you, let your kiddos pretend! Adding props and accessories to their pretend PLAY takes the PLAY to another level. Look at the following toy recommendation for a tea kettle and tea treats. Maybe you’d rather have cookies with your tea. Baking is a fabulous activity to do with your kiddo; it’s rich with learning possibilities! Try some of these easy cookie recipes from the Mom Junction.

Melissa & Doug’s Slice and Bake Wooden Cookie Set

If there’s no time for baking, give your little baker Melissa & Doug’s Slice and Bake Wooden Cookie Set
to bake, decorate, and serve cookies with tea. And, you know, while children PLAY they learn. Some of the things they can learn PLAYING with this toy:
◦ counting
◦ patterns and
◦ 1-to-1 correspondence

And some of the development going on:
◦ fine motor skills
◦ eye-hand coordination and
◦ visual discrimination

Included in Melissa & Doug’s Slice and Bake Wooden Cookie Set:
● cookie sheet
● spatula
● knife
● kitchen mitt
● tube of 12 sliceable cookies
● 12 decorative toppings

Pros:

● Cookies are made from thick wood pieces
● Cookie have velcro on the bottom so they’ll stick to the cookie sheet
● Lots of accessories to facilitate pretend PLAY
● Cookies can be decorated with “icing”
● Comes with a container to hold all the cookies

Cons:

● Some toy ovens are too small for the cookie sheet
● Some families do not appreciate having toys with multiple pieces
● Velcro can attract dirt and/or pull off over time

Sifting through…

For me, none of the cons are significant enough to outweigh the benefits. Melissa & Doug’s Slice and Bake Wooden Cookie Set gets a yummy PLAY ON THUMBS UP of seal of approval! If your kiddo is 3 years or older and, is interested in baking, I think they’ll enjoy PLAYING with this!

**Add a rhythmic element to this, clap hands and pat legs to the following beat:
pat, clap, pat, clap, pat, clap, pat

(Yes, if you’re older-than-dirt like me, this used to be Who Stole the Cookie from the Cookie Jar.)

This year’s tea was something we all were looking forward too. And then this happened….

Tea will happen another time because, bottom line for us: Family first!
