The Wisdom of Puddles

Epic rain right?! Are you starting to wonder what the sun looks like? I don’t blame you! The rain has been unrelenting the last handful of days. Of course, one GOOD thing to come out of all that rain: PUDDLES!!

Who knows how long the breaks between rain storms will be; it might be a day or just minutes before we FINALLY see a day of sunshine.
It’s okay to imagine it though.

And feel free to sing out loudly Good day SUNSHINE  even as your kiddos (and maybe even you?!) jump away in puddle after puddle!

If you haven’t let your kidlet experience the wonderful world of puddles, then NOW is the time! Jumping and splashing in puddles uses large muscle groups and develops their gross motor skills—plus it’s just plain fun! Read more about the benefits of jumping.

If you’re kidlet has been able to go out and experience the joy of a puddle, now’s the time to turn it into a science moment! Science comes only after your kiddo’s jumped and splashed to their heart’s content. Once that’s happened, have them check to see if there are any reflections in the puddle. Puddles are an easy, accessible way to experience, out in Nature, what a reflection means. I talk—with the help of my ‘dog’ Joey—about reflections in this clip

EXTEND the DISCOVERING by creating a Reflections Play Pack!

The photo below shows the items I’ve gathered so far. The idea behind a Play Pack is to embrace heuristic learning.
Definition: Heuristic learning = of or related to an approach to learning that embraces experimentation, trial and error and hands-on experiments to enable the learner to discover principles on their own rather than being told.
That being said, discovery can be facilitated by the items put out and/or any accompanying accessories like visual aids, etc. included in the learning environment.

Things that reflect light

When you came across puddles, did you let your child jump in? Did you join her/him? (I HOPE so!!) Were you able to see any reflections?

Yours in Play!
