Stack & Sort Board by Melissa & Doug
My first preference in toys is when they’re made from real materials. Sometimes I have to concede to ease of cleaning for sanitation purposes, but the tactile experience wood or stone or fabric offers is by far much more satisfying than plastic (bleh)
The Stack & Sort Board by Melissa & Doug is, happily, a wooden toy –one with (15) brightly colored pieces. Accept that your kidlet will take OFF the pieces—and keep them off—first and maybe for quite some time before they’re interested in putting them back on the correct pegs. The base has a printed key on it to offer guidance, but it’s inconspicuous and wouldn’t present an obstacle if your kiddo wanted to go free-form!
The toy is suggested for children
Ages 2-4 years old
but the individual pieces are large enough not to pose a choking hazard so I think younger toddlers would enjoy this as well.
The Stack & Sort Board gets a PLAY ON stamp of approval! The colorful pieces can be used to:
● encourage sorting
● matching
● counting
● stacking
● dexterity
● fine motor skills
● color recognition
and more—like patterning and learning the meaning of “on” or “off”!
Other considerations:
PROS:
Interactive
Multiple use
Colorful
Durable
Easy to Handle
CONS:
Pieces could get lost
Not challenging enough (mostly for preschoolers)
