Some children tend towards pretend PLAY more easily than others, but all children should be encouraged to engage in it. Pretend PLAY offers many benefits for children—a couple that come to mind…
Pretend PLAY requires:
1. Higher level thinking skills and
2. Social competence
When children pretend PLAY they make use of cognitive strategies like problem-solving and the use of symbolism. Additionally, to successfully pretend PLAY, children are required to negotiate and compromise with others; they must show a willingness to listen and understand—in other words pretend PLAY requires some pretty sophisticated social skills!
When SPRING arrived for the preschoolers, one of my favorite themes dealt with the seemingly magical transformation caterpillars go through to become butterflies. You can let your children enter the (pretend) world of butterflies!
Beautiful Butterfly Wings by Hearth Song
Your kiddo can choose to flit, flutter or fly about up, up and away with these beautifully designed wings. Easily worn with elastic shoulder loops and elastic finger loops, the wings are inspired by real butterfly wing colors and shapes.
Blue Morpho: 41″ x 22″
Luna Moth: 40″ x 331/2″
Swallowtail: 39″ x 301/2″
For ages 3 years and up.
For supporting pretend PLAY, these butterfly wings get a PLAY ON stamp of approval!
Pros:
● Durable
● Realistic pattern on wings
● Easy to get on and off
Cons:
● Hand washable
● Would have freed-up kiddos’ hands if the elastic was around their wrists instead of the fingers, but it’s not insurmountable
Butterflies capture children’s imaginations—if you’re looking for MORE learning activities to do with a caterpillar/butterfly theme try the Spring set of Go PLAY Activity Cards!
