Bike riding with your child(ren) is a great family activity! I have many wonderful memories of bike trips over the years with my family, as a kiddo, and, later as a parent. To get your kidlet enthusiastic about riding, you’ll want to start them straightaway.
At the moment, I’m technically carbo-loading and psyching myself up to get out on my bike for another training ride. Problem is—I’d rather ride WITH someone and in temperatures not quite so hot! But, as my departure date is looming, I will drag myself out and put in some time in the saddle.
Eating and thinking of riding, I remember the 1st time my 1st born was subjected to her 1st ride. It really reinforces my belief that we 1st-borns are truly experimental children!
Bike Riding with Your Child: Back in the Day
Way back in the mid-80s, accessories were basic (or primitive) when it came to cycling with children. My number one concern was insuring my baby’s safety. So she was strapped into her bike seat and had a helmet snugly over her head. Only problem: The helmets in those days were heavy and not only big, but gigantic! In fact, they were too heavy for an infant’s neck to manage. Luckily, her Papa is an outside-of-the-box problem-solver. The solution: Bungee cords!
Thankfully, it didn’t take too long before she grew enough to control her head while wearing that huge helmet.
Bike Riding with Your Child: Now!
Parents nowadays have a lot more options to cycle with their young children; options not involving bungee cords! There are improved bike seats:
There are bike trailers that take comfort to a whole new level! Throw in some toys, snacks, something to drink, maybe a blanket and your kiddo’s set!
Read about other new and improved gear I’ve seen. I’m looking forward to trying out some of these with the grandbubs. They’d make the prospect of peddling much more appealing!

Well it’s time to hit the road…
